  • Member of the Month - Rod Kratz

Motivated with exercise to help him through his busy days as a surgeon, Rod Kratz has become an early morning fixture at Seattle Athletic Club. Rod came to Seattle over a year and a half ago after finishing his residency in Indiana to accept a position on the surgical team at Northwest Hospital. Soon after moving his family to Seattle, Rod joined the Club – bringing a positive attitude and an inspirational persona with him each day. For that, Rod Kratz is our “Member of the Month” for July.

Rod is an avid soccer player and also enjoys squash, weight training and cycling. After settling into “Club Life”, Rod decided he wanted to try out a morning cycling class. Weeks passed by as Rod wavered on which class to try; then gave into the urge and jumped onto a bike in Judy Lang’s Monday morning class. Judy helped him get oriented on the bike and made sure he was welcomed in class by the die hard morning cyclists. Rod was pleasently surprised at how much fun the class was – great music, instructors and members!

Most recently, Rod decided to work on the nutritional aspect of his fitness program. He kept a monthly food diary to learn more about his eating patterns and the effects they have on his exercise program. Working with this information, Rod is now able to make sound adjustments to help maximize his workouts.

What’s next for Rod? Rod dreams of someday participating in a cycling tour through Northern Italy and France, or possibly hiking the Inca trail in South America. Rod’s short term goals are to get off his current exercise plateau and build more variety into his workouts.

    Tour de SAC

This year we are running things a bit different to bring out the competitive side in you! For those that want to participate, you will be awarded one point for every minute of cycling you do. The instructor will take roll at the start of each class and turn in the roster to track each riders progress which will then be posted in the cycling studio. At the end of the tour, the cyclist with the most points earned will be presented with a club perk! That's not all, for every cyclist that participates in at least 10 classes within the 23 days of the tour, will receive a Tour de SAC t-shirt.

    Good Luck and have fun!

Getting the Most Out of Your Rides
    By Lamont Fish, Personal Trainer

When the rain breaks and the snow melts, many of us jump on our shiny new bikes, or our trusty old ones, for some outdoor activity. It's true that cycling is easier to the leg joints compared to running, but this doesn't mean it should be taken lightly. Cycling works the entire body with much emphasis on both legs. To get the most out of you outdoor workout on your bike you should consider integrating strength and stretching components to our workouts at the Club, as well as preparing for emergency roadside/trailside situations while riding.
