Train the Trainer and Support The Seattle Milk Fund

Yep, you read correctly. It’s your turn to get back at your personal trainers and help raise money for the Seattle Milk Fund.

The way it works is by placing a bid in our silent auction to “Train the Trainer”. The winning bid will receive the opportunity to put a trainer of their choice through an hour long workout while supporting the Seattle Milk Fund. So, if you have a secret vendetta against your trainer, this is the opportuity to finally get some redemption.

Our silent auction will take place from Tuesday, May 26th – Friday, June 5th for a training session on Wednesday, June 10th at 6:00 am or 6:00 pm.

The Seattle Milk Fund was created in 1907 by a group of woman with one goal in mind: To provide a little sunshine in the lives of the discouraged. Back then it was fruit baskets and flowers, today the process is more complex but for the better! Now the Seattle Milk Fund provides family assistance fullfilling the basic necessities including food, clothing, diapers, hygiene supplies/household items, children’s supplies such as shoe vouchers, backpacks and school supplies. Childcare grants are also available while one or both parents attend school as well as education grants for people in need that are highly motivated but lack academic superiority.

For more information about the Seattle Milk Fund, visit www.seattlemilkfund.org.

Contact Dana Hansen for more details about the silent auction.

Triathlon Swim Training: “A Huge Success”

For most beginning triathletes, the swim leg of the triathlon is the biggest obstacle and greatest fear. This Spring, Seattle Athletic Club launched a Triathlon Swim Training program aimed at novice triathletes to help them improve their skill, speed and confidence in the water. The class quickly filled up with athletes from around the region, ranging from first-time triathletes to Ironmen-in-training.

Starting with a video analysis, instructors, Julie Corman and Duncan Mitchell, have taken the group through a series of drills and exercises to improve their form and technique in the water. Participants are also sent home with a set of laminated workout cards for practice between sessions.

After 5 weeks in the program, each athlete was put through the same 100-yard time trial that he/she had swam on the first day of class. “The improvements surpassed my wildest expectations,” Julie said of the results. Swimmers dropped an average of 15 seconds, with one participant seeing a 21% improvement over her initial swimming time. “All swimmers improved. And we haven’t even started the speed, power and endurance segment of the program,” Duncan added.

After completing this segment of the program and the lakes have warmed up, the group will move to Lake Washington . “Response to this program has been so great that we’ll be offering more sessions throughout the year,” Duncan said.

Rollin', Rollin', Rollin'!
Saturday, June 6th at 9:00 am

Have you pondered what those blue foam rolls in the stretching room are used for?

Join personal fitness trainer Christian Bruhn at 9:00 am on Saturday, June 6th to learn about the foam roll and self-myofascial release (SMR).

If you find yourself stretching on a regular basis but can’t seem to get past a certain point or are still feeling stiff, SMR might help you reach your goals and move pain free. The foam roll helps release tension in the myofascial sytem (muscle and fascia) that might be caused by repetitive stress, trauma, poor exercising movements or poor posture.

Foam rolling using the SMR approach can help correct muscle imbalances, increase joint range of motion, decrease muscle soreness, relieve joint stress, stiffness and increase neuromuscular efficiency and function. Christian will provide you the tools you need to get started on your path to moving pain free in this interactive workshop.

Please be sure to sign up at the front desk to reserve your spot. This workshop is complimentary; for more information please contact Christian Bruhn at 206-522-9400.
