Intro to BODYPUMP!

The BODYPUMP® classes are proving to become more and more popular! BODYPUMP® can increase your lean muscle mass by improving muscle strength and endurance. The results and rate of improvement depends on your initial fitness level, how often you do the class and of course how hard you work in the class. BODYPUMP® uses high repetitions which recruits mostly type 1 muscle fibers often known as slow twitch or slow oxidative fibers that are used during aerobic and endurance activities. This is the main reason why overall hypertrophy from BodyPump® is lower when compared to high-resistance, low repetition training. So in the end, you will achieve that lean tone muscle you’ve been desiring rather than bulk up!!

If you are interested in trying the class or want to make the most of your workout while in class, try our Intro to BODYPUMP® Techinuque classes. These classes will focus on teaching you the basic moves that are used in class and how to work to your potential in order to get your end results, that lean toned muscle!

UW Squash Team Challenges Northgate Players, But Comes Up Short

The University of Washington undergraduate squash team, preparing for the heart of their season and upcoming trips to Cal and Yale, challenged some of the players at the Seattle Athletic Club Northgate to a Sunday scrimmage on January 31. The match gave the players at the club a chance to see how a college match works, with a formal pre-match lineup, introductions, and pleasantries. Match after match, the players from the club turned up the heat and took the match win from the Huskies by a score of 7-3 while family and friends of both groups cheered on the players.

The teams were remarkably well matched with three of the matches going to five games and two others going to four games. The battle for the number one spot pitted ever-improving junior Rob Young from Portland against veteran player Jeff Evans. Evans won, 3-1, but had to work hard for it. At the other end of the ladder, #10 for UW, junior Brandi Conforth, gave Charlie Carosella all he could handle before Carosella pulled out the win, 3-2. In a match that showed how squash accommodates a variety of styles, 5'5" freshman Eugene Chau forced lanky 6'3" Anton Bozian to retrieve all over the court with Chau eventually winning 3-1. The day's closest match came at #7 where Steve Stevenson, a former Seattle junior now at UW, took the match over Greg Maass with a 12-10 victory in the fifth. Michael Greenleaf demonstrated that many years of play and cunning strategy can overcome incredible athleticism as he defeated swift and strong Husky Ryan Tyler, 3-1.

Everyone who played from the club wishes the best luck to the Husky team and welcomes them back anytime. Go Huskies!

Stay Safe in the Water with Your Infant

Each Spring and Summer too many adults rush to save infants from drowning in backyard pools or bath tubs. Typically these traumatizing events increase when the weather gets warmer outside and activities in and around the water arise. Do not let this happen to you, your friends, or your family! Now is the time to prepare and prevent future water related accidents.

Early childhood water education is an important step to take when you have access to pools or family vacations that involve swimming. Our Parent-Tot classes are aimed to educate both parents and children while providing a comfortable, nurturing environment that accommodates learning water safety skills such as knowing how to roll over, float, glide, kick and reaching for safety or assistance.

Please join Brad Kickert, our new parent-tot instructor, each Saturday from 9:30-10:00am. For more information on Parent-Tot classes, or questions you may have about our swimming program, please contact Aquatics Director, Dan Lavin at 206-522-9400.

Adding Power Moves to Your Workout
    By Paul Nelson, Personal Trainer

As the new year resolutions slowly fade and your workouts don’t seem as relevent as when you started in January, it is time to ramp it up and try something new. Power equals strength multiplied by time. Therefore if we increase the speed of our lifts we increase our power output. This has many applications for life and when done correctly, can give you more benefit than any other exercise. These are advanced moves that incorporate muscular and cardiovascular strength and endurance into one activity. In essence this is exactly what is required to perform well in sports, and power moves connect that last piece of the puzzle between building strength and applying it in a real life situation.

This is great for those of you who want to look great and burn calories.

    The Perfect Lunge
    By Dana Hansen, Fitness Director

The lunge, is a common exercise to tone and build your legs and glutes, but are you doing it as effectively and as safely as you can? There are so many versions of a lunge, so let us talk about the basic stationary lunge. The stationary lunge exercise is a multi-joint functional exercise and should be performed that way. What I mean by a multi-joint functional exercise is that there is more than one joint moving at a time. With this particular exercise the hip, knee and ankle joints are all involved.

Does Your Yoga Practice "Awaken" You?
    By Shannon McCall, Yoga Instructor

The classical Yoga of Patanjali, an Indian sage who lived more than 2,000 years ago, has eight limbs, or aspects to the path:

  • Yama
  • Niyama
  • Asana
  • Pranayama
  • Pratyahara
  • Dharana
  • Dhyana
  • Samadhi
  • The idea is that for yoga students to transform and reach their full potential, the need to practice all eight limbs is required. Additionally, each limb can contain all the other limbs, so students can practice all eight limbs within any one limb. It’s holographic.
